New synagogue Česká Lípa

This diploma thesis deals with the design of a new synagogue in Česká Lípa. The subject of the solution is also the design of a Jewish community center, a kosher restaurant and a museum of Jewish culture. An architectural study of A2 format and a reduced copy of A3 format were prepared. A presentation poster in B1 format and an architectural design model in 1: 200 scale were made. When designing the complex, I emphasized the main visual axes from the street to the building. The synagogue is designed as the dominant feature of the whole complex - it is elevated above the other masses of the building. The complex is designed as a single-story mass with a square floor plan. The individual corners are elevated above the other mass. Each of the corners responds with its mass to the internal traffic. In the middle of the complex is a square outdoor courtyard. The expression of the object is to express purity and simplicity - that is why light shades have been designed. The surfaces are covered with white plaster and the concrete surfaces are designed with exposed white concrete. Gold brass elements are designed here as a reference to Jewish wealth.

The subject of the diploma thesis is the design of the New Synagogue in Česká Lípa on U Synagogy Street. In the past, there was a large Jewish community with a school, mikvehs and a synagogue in the area, which was burned down during the Crystal Night in November 1938. Today, there is a public parking area and dilapidated buildings from the 1990s. The aim of the design is to create a new facility for the Jewish community, including administration with a rabbinate, community center, archive of Jewish literature with study, multipurpose lecture hall, workshop rooms for the Jewish community with the possibility of renting the public, kosher restaurant for members and the general public. kosher products, a synagogue with a ritual bath mikveh and a memorial to the victims of the holocaust in the courtyard. The building should also serve to educate the general and professional public and the Jewish Sunday class for education and leisure activities. The dominant element of the whole building are the erected masts running to the lost in regular lines, like the reminiscence of the burned synagogue. This monument forms the center line of the entire building. The resulting volume is at a similar height of the original building according to the preserved drawing documentation. The masts themselves symbolize the victims of the Holocaust in Česká Lípa. At their tops are spotlights that symbolize the souls of the victims. The monument is complemented by two fountains with running water. The newly designed synagogue respects the position of the floor plan of the burned synagogue. The prayer house is deliberately situated below ground level in the spirit of the fulfillment of Psalm 130: 1 "From the depths of the bottomless I call to you, Lord."

The diploma thesis is focused on the design of a new synagogue in Česká Lípa. The solved area is located close to the city center on the site where the original synagogue was burned down during Crystal Night. The boundary of the area is U Synagogy Street, on the north and south sides there are terraced buildings and on the east side there is an embankment with a first-class road. The area used to be behind the city walls, which no longer exist. The design of the synagogue in the Z-V axis and the connection to the U Synagogy road are also important in the design. The negative factor that affects the area, is the busy and dusty road located on the embankment, which creates a visual barrier and divides the city into several parts. For these reasons, the synagogue was located at the intersection of the adjacent streets and as far away from the busy road as possible. The other objects in the design are positioned so that they create a noise barrier and their windows are not turned to communicate. Thanks to the location of individual functions, an inner block was created in the middle of the solved area, intended for rest and meeting of people. The location of the kosher restaurant attracts its location from the adjacent U Synagogy street and at the same time it is turned into a quiet courtyard, where there is a small outdoor seating area. The office building and community center line the embankment on the east side, separating the busy road from the quiet courtyard. These buildings are also facing the courtyard and only the windows of the stairs or background are located on the facade to the road. In the southern part of the area, a ramp leading to an underground car park is proposed, which connects the administrative building with the community center. An important element of the design are the perforated panels located on the facade of the synagogue. The perforation is based on a Jewish star, these are equilateral triangles. The subject of my diploma thesis is the design of a new synagogue and a Jewish community centre in a town Česká Lípa. The area in question is located on the street U Synagogy, on the south-eastern edge of the historic city centre, on the site where the Jewish town was located in the past. However, the long history of the Jewish community of Česká Lípa, which had its synagogue, Jewish school, rabbinate, mikveh ritual bath and others, was interrupted by the events of the Second World War and the subsequent post-war developments in Czechoslovakia and the world. The original synagogue was burned down by the Nazis in 1938, and many of the monuments of the Jewish community in Česká Lípa gradually disappeared, as did the community itself. My goal is to design a new facility for the Jewish community. Therefore, I designed a proposal for a new synagogue and a community centre, including the administration of the Jewish community with an archive of Jewish literature, exhibition, and lecture spaces, the new mikveh ritual bath and kosher restaurant for members of the community and the general public. The design also includes the overall revitalization of the public space and its pedestrian accessibility, the planting of new greenery and the placement of two new monuments to commemorate the Jewish past of Česká Lípa. The designed project should than serve not only members of the Jewish community, but the whole general public as a new public space that will offer new opportunities for socialization, education, and leisure in a more dignified environment. The defining element of the proposal is the site of the former synagogue, which will become a courtyard that will be surrounded on the three sides by the new synagogue and community centre. Both buildings face the city centre with their main facades and main entrances. Both the synagogue and the community centre will be situated on a raised terrace accessible by a staircase, symbolizing the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The chosen morphology and material design of the buildings intend to evoke the sense of massiveness, stability, dignity, and safety to the passers-by. Two new monuments will be placed on an axis of the new courtyard – the column and the fountain. The column on the place of the former entrance to the former synagogue symbolizing a raised-up finger in warning. The fountain on the spot of the bema, a sacred place where no one except for the rabbi is allowed. The water will symbolically prevent the movement of pedestrians who will have to go around this former sacred place. Nowadays, there is a public parking lot on the site of the former synagogue, and the entire area of the former Jewish town is in a state of neglect. I sincerely hope that with my proposal I will contribute to the commemoration of the Jewish past of Česká Lípa, to understanding among the people and that the nowadays neglected area will become a dignified public space.

In 1939, Nazi propaganda grew stronger, resulting in the burning of many synagogues in large cities such as Brno, Olomouc, Teplice, Jihlava, Ostrava, Opava Trutnov, Frýdek-Místek and Česká Lípa. On 17 April 1863, the foundation stone of the new synagogue was laid in a ceremony attended by the town's population and the town's leadership. The synagogue was built according to the design of the architect Josef Goldbach in the Jewish quarter on the site of an older Jewish sanctuary. During the so-called Kristallnacht of November 10-11, 1938, fanatical inhabitants set fire to the synagogue and stole its furnishings. Subsequently, in 1941, the ruins of the building were removed. The burning of the Česká Lípa synagogue occurred twice. The first time the fire was extinguished by uninformed firemen. The second time they had the "correct" instructions and only guarded the surrounding buildings. The town of Česká Lípa had two monuments erected in the place where the synagogue stood. The first monument in U Synagogy Street was unveiled on 28 October 1995. The second memorial was in the shape of a Jewish tombstone and was created in 1948, but it was not allowed to be installed at that time, so the author hid it and the unveiling of this memorial took place only in 2008. We have decided to restore and commemorate the tradition of the defunct building. We are forming new model situations and letting the synagogue come to life again in the spirit of contemporary architecture, which will also create its historical footprint.
